All men 18 years and older who had a blood pressure reading of 100/90 mm Hg or above were included in this study. The study was conducted from January 2009 until February 2011.
A total of 1203 men (mean age = 58.5 years) were included in the study, and 898 (33%) of the 1203 were taking Viagra (mean duration of Viagra treatment = 14.4 months). The mean baseline systolic blood pressure (SBP) was significantly lower in men taking Viagra than in those who did not (3.5 mmHg [3.0-5.0 mmHg] vs. 4.9 mmHg [4.8-5.0 mmHg]) (p < 0.001). There was no difference in the duration of Viagra treatment or duration of the other cardiovascular events (P = 0.12) or adverse events (P = 0.12) between men taking Viagra and those who did not (p = 0.05).
There were no significant differences in the cardiovascular event rates between men taking Viagra and those who did not (p = 0.14). The overall adverse events in this study were headache, myalgia, back pain, abdominal pain, nasal congestion, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. However, men taking Viagra had more severe side effects including headache, muscle pain, and visual disturbances (p < 0.01).
There were no significant differences in the mean number of deaths, heart attacks or any other serious adverse events between the Viagra and placebo groups. The overall cardiovascular events reported by this study were headache, myalgia, back pain, abdominal pain, nosebleeds, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. These events were mainly mild and transient, and the most common adverse events were headache, myalgia, back pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.
Viagra has a relatively mild effect on blood pressure and it is well tolerated in most men with high blood pressure and other cardiovascular conditions.
